Hoo boy. Pilates does not agree with me!
My core and back hurt so much, I was down for the next couple days. Even standing for more than 20 minutes would hurt. It was not good.
Plus, the format is not great. The next workout scheduled included 40 exercises. That is intimidating in and of itself, but with the app’s format you watch a 10 second video to figure out what you’re doing, do the exercise, then spend a few seconds recording sets and reps in the app before doing it again.

Today’s workout was another kettlebell workout but this time without any swings.
I did four sets with my 12 lbs kettlebell:
Goblet squats (10 reps) Rows with lunge (8 reps per side) Pushups (10 reps) March in place (20 reps) Mountain climbers (20 reps) Music is very important for me to be able to complete any exercise by myself. I was able to do a set per song and listened to very high energy angry songs in order to finish this.

Today I did another video workout. This time was a core strength video supplied by our gym.
It was way too much planking and squatting and lunging. I also hate mountain climbers.
I was sweaty and I disliked it. The instructor was upbeat and shouted out counts so I finished it. I probably will not do that video again. It is still better than the one yoga video that I quit.

Today I took a walk outside. I was going stir crazy, so I just walked. Outside.
I was out for almost an hour in the sunshine. I only made it a mile and half-ish, but I stopped to do some yoga stretches in the park a couple times.
I have this tendency to start my walk nice and leisurely-paced, then gradually speed up until I’m almost at a jog without realizing it, then I get slightly winded and sweaty and my giant hamstrings get all tight becuase I’m going faster than I meant to without warming up.

I am probably going to give up on pilates because the workouts just take so long and I have to check my phone every third exercise. It would have been better as a long video than each a short clip. I think I like having audio instruction instead of having it be all on myself.

Jenn convinced me to try some of the things the gym has on offer while it’s closed. I miss the gym.
So I signed up for a 30 day trainer program called Pilates Core Program. It’s pilates for beginners and I think Jenn is a few days ahead of me on the same program.
Today was my first day and the program had me doing a series called Core Pilates Classical Mat.

Today’s pilates workout was arm day.
I used my husband’s travel distilled water bottles as weights. They are 500 mL and a nice size to hold.
I did five reps of each exercise and took all of a few minutes. I was able to convince Amanda to try it. All hail free workouts!
I also ordered a new yoga mat and exercise bands. My current mat is starting to shred a little and I want to be prepared.

Today I started with a yoga video. After 10 minutes of trying to keep up, I quit and switched to a mat pilates video. The yoga instructor was expecting the viewer to remember all the poses in a flow and I don’t have that kind of attention keeping at this point.
The pilates video was only 20 minutes but it still kicked my butt. I am very glad they had one person always doing the modifications for the exercises.

Today was the first day I did the pilates workout. It was a lot. I was very very sweaty.
The exercises weren’t hard to do. I like that it is all bodyweight and mat work. But oh boy, was I sore.

So I lied. I did the core workout video again. It was still sweaty hell.
I signed up for a 30 day pilates at home program. So we will see how that turns out when I start tomorrow.

Today was an Amanda training day with Trainer J. I asked for an easy day because I have an important meeting I need to be alive and alert for this afternoon.
So J’s solution was 100 reps of leg press. (Insert Amanda’s confused blinking face here)
Leg Press:
20x 180 lbs
20x 270 lbs
20x 270 lbs
20x 360 lbs
10x 450 lbs
10x 540 lbs

Today I took a walk outside. I was going stir crazy, so I just walked. Outside.
I was out for almost an hour in the sunshine. I only made it a mile and half-ish, but I stopped to do some yoga stretches in the park a couple times.
I have this tendency to start my walk nice and leisurely-paced, then gradually speed up until I’m almost at a jog without realizing it, then I get slightly winded and sweaty and my giant hamstrings get all tight becuase I’m going faster than I meant to without warming up.

Today I did a Turbo Jam. The 15 minute Burn video. It went better than yesterday. Very sweat, much heart beat. Felt good.
Then I stretched for a while. Yay!

In honor of social distancing, Amanda and I did not go to the gym today. We both worked out separately at home.
I did a kettlebell pyramid workout with my 12 lbs kettlebell.
Goblet squats Pushups One handed swings (each side) Modified burpees (I didn’t jump) Sit and press I did a set of 7 reps, and then a set of 6, and continued that way down to a final set with me doing each exercise once.

Amanda did a bunch of random stuff that she hopes equals a real workout.
Throughout the day there were:
- 30 goblet squats with a 10 lb medicine ball
- About 10-15 really poorly done ‘push-ups’
- A 25 minute walk outside with the husband that went for right around a mile (very cold!

I also need to remember to charge my wireless headphones before I go. The cord on my cheap headphones just gets in my way.

1 kilometer in 5 sets of 4 50m laps. It was a cold morning again today and for the last three sets the sun was in my eyes but I did it. I also had two sub 7 minute sets.
Maybe I should start trying to add a crawl in.

15 50m laps We were going to do five sets (4 laps each set), but after set three decided to only do four and then soak in the spa.

16 50m laps done in sets of 4 I guess this means it is time to start working on 5 sets of 4 laps.
Remember a year ago I couldn’t do a lap without resting.

14 50m laps In a personal win, I didn’t snort any water nor whack my head on a lane divider. I think that is a first.

Someday we will come up with a water-based yoga. Someday.

We both swam 800 meters and hit up the spa afterwards.
All four of my sets 200 meters were under 7 minutes and 30 seconds. I am certainly getting faster and more consistent.
Amanda’s corner:
All my sets were over 8 minutes. I’m recovering from an injury and babying my shoulder for a bit. I’m just surprised I made it 800 m at all.

Today we suffered in water.
Jenn made it 800 meters, Amanda only made it 600.
Amanda’s shoulder injury acted up and she didn’t want to kill it.
The pool was overly busy.

It was, in fact, not a new trend. I missed a few days.
But today started a new week and I did a 20 Minute Jam.
I start a new job tomorrow, so maybe with some routine in my life I’ll be better able to maintain an exercise routine while they gym is closed. I miss my workouts with Jenn.

Another 20 minute Turbo Jam.
I’m getting kind of good at this. I wish I had a 30 minute workout, but the next one is a 40 minute jam. 40 minutes seems a bit too long for me yet.

20 Minute Jam today. I really like turbo jam. Something about the movements and the music.
I even kept up fairly well today. I do the low impact version (no jumping, lower kicks, etc), but it’s still a challenging workout. It feels good.
I still miss the gym.

So I’ve ditched the pilates program and gone back to Turbo Jam.
Today I did the 20 minute workout. I forgot just how much more intense it is than the 15 minute Burn!
The Burn is meant as an introduction to the concept of a Turbo Jam workout, and the 20 minute workout digs right in and gets you sweating from minute 2! But I made it through. Not well, but no need to be a perfectionist my first time through, right?

About ten days ago I let myself give up for a bit. The world turned upside down, everything closed down, and things got strange. I consciously allowed myself to wallow for a while. I knew I’d eventually pull myself out of my funk because I’m a positive and resiliant person by nature. But I needed some time to process, to regroup and adapt.
Mostly I stress-cleaned, slept excessively, watched a lot of streamed movies and TV, and crocheted things.

Work is exhausting. I have not been working out.
On the bright side, I have been taking a 15-20 minute walk at lunch time almost every day. I have a mandatory 1 hour lunch and only need about 30 minutes to eat, so I walk before I eat. It’s warm. And walking it boring. But I have podcasts and 15 minutes is easy enough.

Today’s workout was the same 30 minute yoga video that I did back on March 20th. I was able to keep up with the video the entire time.
I am planning to go outside this afternoon so I can clean up my yard from winter. Lots of sticks and leaf litter to pick up. Maybe I will figure out where to put a raised bed or some flowers. I’ve got plenty of time this spring.

Things are extremely different now than they were five days ago. The gym is closed because of COVID-19. We will be working out from home separately for a while.
This morning I did the Root yoga class from the gym. I did skip the final set of one flow as I got tired of pivoting on my knee. Yoga mat, rug, and felt rug backer is no match for concrete.
